Abstract

The article studies the documentary legacy of Metropolitan Josyf Nelubovych-Tukalsky of Kyiv, and for the first time publishes archival sources, in particular from the archival repositories of Poland, such as universalis and letters. All currently known documents are included. Metropolitan Josyf’s episcopacy occurred during the severe times of Ruin, which did not facilitate the storage of his documentary legacy, and his activities and support of Hetman Petro Doroshenko, who strove to consolidate the Hetmanate’s sovereignty, led to a de facto ban on research into the life and work of the metropolitan. Thus, the research is long overdue to be brought back from oblivion, especially since Tukalsky was a highly educated man, a true leader of the Ukrainian ecclesiastics, and played an essential role not only in the Church’s history but also in the formation of the Hetmanate’s internal and external policies. The author traces his connections with the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, provides evidence in favour of the metropolitan’s education in this educational institution; his ties with the government of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, especially with King Mykhailo Vyshnevetskyi.
