INFRINGEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION OF THE KYIV METROPOLITANATE TO THE MOSCOW PATRIARCHATE IN 1686: THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF THE ORIGINALS AND TRANSLATIONS OF PATRIARCHAL CHARTERS

Abstract

The article deals with the trilingue of the texts of documents concerning the transfer of the Kyivan Metropolitanate to the Moscow Patriarchate in 1686: Greek text, Old Russian and Ukrainian translations of the charters of Dionysius, Patriarch of Constantinople, to the kings (tsars) Ivan and Peter Alekseevich and the princess Sophia Alexeiivna (May 9, 1686), Dionysius, Patriarch of Constantinople, to the Patriarch of Moscow (June 9, 1686), Dosifei, Patriarch of Jerusalem to the kings (tsars) Ivan and Peter Alekseevich (April 1686). The study of theological and church-legal discourse of letters, palaeographic analysis of documents, and the main - an adequate translation of the Greek text, testify to certain lexicalsemantic differences between the Greek text and the Russian translation (which can be viewed as lapsus translationis and lapsus sensus), as well as conscious distortions the jurisdictional status of the Kyiv Metropolitanate on these documents (even with the correct reading and translation in the old Russian language). To a certain extent, even the Old Russian translation attests to the legal status of these letters, the so-called ἐκδόσεως γράμμα «edition of the letter» (as translated there, «letters»), which, due to political circumstances, was ignored by the complete subordination of the Kyivan Metropolitanate to the Moscow Patriarchate. Changing the church - legal paradigm in Ukraine gives an opportunity to look impartially both at the cultural and historical context of those events and directly to the original source and the translations of these charters. The texts of all three charters clearly and unambiguously certify the fact that during the transfer of the Kyivan Metropolitanate to the Moscow Patriarch the supremacy of the Patriarch of Constantinople remained. The charter of Patriarch Dosipheus, which is a kind of invective to the decision of the Patriarch of Constantinople to give permission to the Moscow Patriarch to ordain the Metropolitan of Kyiv, reveals many points of violation of the church ethical norms and the artificiality of the reasons for this transfer.
