The article focuses on the activity of the outstanding public and state figure of the national liberation struggle of the Ukrainian people in 1917–1921 Ivan Lvovich Lypa (1865–1923) and its influence on the religious life in Ukraine during this period. The article presents an analysis of the problems of relations between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian state in Ukraine during the reign of the Directory of the Ukrainian National Republic headed by Chief Ataman Simon Petliura. In this difficult period of confrontation between the defenders of Ukrainian state from military aggression from bolshevik and white guard Russia, there were attempts to resolve issues of state and church independence from Moscow. On the basis of archival and documentary sources, an attempt was made to cover the complex and dramatic events of the past objectively as well as to show the participation of the Minister of Worship (Religion) of the Directory Ivan Lypa in solving state-church problematic relations between the leadership of the Ukrainian National Republic and the pro-Russian episcopate in Ukraine.
