ST. MICHAEL’S CHURCHTEACHING SCHOOL AT THE KYIVGOLDEN-DOMED MONASTERY

Abstract

The article deals with the activity of the church-teaching school, founded by the rector of St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery by the Reverend Bishop Hieronymus (Exempliarskyi) in 1890, reflects the number of subjects, filling the school with scientific manuals, library, attention paid to religious education and practical training of students in rural teaching, the pupils’ life at school, its impact on the education of Ukrainian society. The students ' training course, school subjects, teachers' staff are analyzed. The school time and the students' daily life are reflected. Demand for future students who are selected by the exam, the most prepared and able to master the course in two years is shown. With such students, the teachers did not stop to repeat the course of the first year of two-year schools, but continued to study the subjects further, respectively, in the second and third years of study in those schools. The long-term experience of the teachers is shown, which revealed that the two-year term was quite sufficient for the full assimilation of all subjects by students; and the annual examinations of the students for the title of teacher, held by the seminary faculty commission, confirmed the good results. The staff of teachers at school, their life and living conditions are considered. The role of the church-teaching school in the preparation of permanent teachers for parish-church schools, capable assistants for the pastors of the Church in the cause of enlightenment of the people is determined. The fulfillment of the main task of the churchteaching school - education the future teachers in the true Christian Orthodox Church mood is revealed. A large set of textbooks has been shown, which made it possible to provide much more useful information to the students of the St. Michael School than envisaged by the program, which helped in the future increase the level of primary education among the Ukrainian people.
